The million dollar question! Navigation on this race is aimed at novice adventure racers - in other words you should be able to work a compass and read a 1:50,000 map, but there will be enough waypoints and directional 'clues' to keep you on the right track. Feedback from last year's event was that the 'treasure' was too easy to find. This year the treasure clues will be located more off-course (i.e. a conscious diversion needed) and those persons with navigation savvy will be at a distinct advantage...so, if you good with a compass and fit too, you really might have to chose whether you going for a category win or the elusive...albeit attractive..treasure find.
In terms of fitness: both team members (you are as slow as the weakest team member) should have some mountainbike and hiking experience. Although the mountain bike leg is not particularly technical, you should comfortably be able to complete a 40km offroad ride, and be able to do a 15km hike without too much sweat. This year's mtb leg will include sections of the Karkloof singletrack, so sit tight and enjoy the ride. If you happen to checkout Google Earth, you will see that our start/finish venue is at the base of a high escarpment - a 'challenging ascent' of close on 400m awaits...the good news, is that you wont be portaging bikes.
Equipment Required
It is compulsory for each team member to have:
o Their own Drinking System (minimum 1 ltr carrying capacity). This can either be in the way of a camel-pak hydration system or water bottles fitted into a trail-running pack.
o Bike, helmet & essential spares (spare tube, multi-tool/chainbreaker, quick-link –sufficient to make emergency trail repairs)
o Appropriate trail running shoes & socks
o A whistle, to be kept on participants at all times
o Energy foods i.e. glucose sachets, bananas, energy bars
o Cellphone - sealed in a waterproof/ ziplock bag
It is advisable for each team member to bring:
o Sunglasses, sunscreen & hat
o Wick-dry clothing.
Each TEAM , must have (between them):
o A compass
o A waterproof map bag (to keep your map clean & dry throughout the race). It is also very useful to attach a map board to the handlebar on one of the bikes (easier navigation on the mountainbike leg).
o 2 pens
o small notebook/ paper
o 7mm rope X 3-5M
o 1 x knife
o 1 x space blanket
It is advisable for each team to carry:
o Basic First Aid Kit: with rehydrate sachets, voltaren/ ibuprofen tablets, crepe bandage(s), plasters etc.
